The Ultimate Moving Checklist:
A Step-by-Step Guide to a Smooth Move
Moving can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Between packing, changing addresses, coordinating movers, and getting your new home ready, there are countless details to keep track of.
The good news? A little planning can make the process much easier.
Whether you are moving across town in San Diego County or relocating to another state, this moving checklist can help keep you organized from the moment your move is scheduled until the last box is unpacked.
6–8 Weeks Before Moving
☐ Create a Moving Plan
Choose your moving date and create a basic timeline for everything that needs to be completed.

If you are using professional movers, get multiple estimates and confirm what services are included. Ask about insurance, packing services, additional fees, and cancellation policies.
☐ Start Decluttering

- Government agencies
☐ Arrange for Utilities
Schedule the transfer, connection, or cancellation of:

- Water
- Trash service
- Internet
- Cable or streaming-related equipment
Make sure utilities are scheduled to be available when you arrive at your new home.
☐ Transfer or Obtain Homeowners Insurance
Confirm that insurance coverage for your new property will be active on the appropriate date.
☐ Plan for Children and Pets
Moving day can be stressful for children and pets. Consider arranging childcare or pet care so they are safely out of the way while movers are working.
2–4 Weeks Before Moving
☐ Confirm Your Moving Arrangements
Reconfirm the moving company, date, arrival time, destination address, and services being provided.
☐ Continue Packing
Pack room by room and clearly label every box.

One Week Before Moving

Follow manufacturer recommendations for preparing refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, and other appliances for transportation.

Make sure you have keys, garage remotes, access codes, parking information, and any other items needed to enter the property.
☐ Take Photos
Before movers begin, photograph valuable items and the condition of furniture and appliances. It can also be useful to photograph both homes before and after the move.
Moving Day

Do not place valuables, medications, important documents, jewelry, cash, or essential electronics on the moving truck.
☐ Protect Floors and Doorways

Before leaving your old home, check:

Bonus Tip: Create a “First Night” Kit
One of the smartest moving strategies is to pack a separate first-night bag or box.

Bedroom: Sheets, pillows, blankets, pajamas
Kitchen: Coffee maker, cups, paper plates, utensils, snacks
