One of the most famous houses in San Diego County is the Whaley House in Old Town San Diego.
🏠 The Whaley House

Location: Old Town San Diego
Built: 1857
Claim to Fame: Known as one of the most haunted houses in America
📖 The Story Behind It
The Whaley House was built by Thomas Whaley, a successful businessman who constructed it on land that previously served as a public gallows site. As San Diego’s first two-story brick home, it wasn’t just a residence — it also operated as:
A general store
A courthouse
The city’s first commercial theater
However, the location held a dark history. Just a few years before construction, a man named Yankee Jim Robinson was executed there. Legend has it his spirit — along with other Whaley family members who later died in the home — never left.
Over time, residents and visitors reported unexplained sights and sounds, transforming the Whaley House into a nationally recognized haunted landmark. Today, it’s a museum and a popular stop on San Diego ghost tours.
👻 Why It’s Famous
Considered one of the most haunted homes in the U.S.
Featured on paranormal TV shows and documentaries
A quintessential piece of early San Diego history
🏡 Honorable Mention
If we’re talking iconic private residences, another contender is the Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) House in La Jolla, once owned by the famous author. It overlooks the ocean and inspired much of his whimsical work — but it’s not open to the public like the Whaley House.
